WATER FILTERS SYSTEM

Water Filters

Water is vital to good health. The human body cannot live without water for more than a few days. Without access to clean water, our health may be compromised. Filtered water is a great way to get our  six to eight glasses a day of healthy, contaminate-free water.

Why Water Filters?

Our clean water has to flow through water tanks and water pipes, collecting rust and contaminants, before it reaches us.

  • Excessive chlorine in the water.
  • Clean water supports our immune system, boosts health and reduces risk of cancer and indigestion.
  • It removes impurities which can vary from solid sediments such as sand particles and heavy metals.
  • Drinking contaminated water is the leading cause of disease. Tap water can contain thousands of possible contaminants, several of which are poisonous.
  • Maintain a neutral PH level in the body. This is because the alkaline water would neutralise the acidic content in our body which could have been resulted from food or stress.

Water Filter System

There are many different methods of water filtrations. Filters use sieving, absorption, ion exchanges and other processes to remove unwanted substances from water.
In our specialty, we shall focus on Point-of-use water filters for home use

Point-of-use water filters for home use include granular-activated carbon filters (GAC) used for carbon filtering, depth filter, metallic alloy filters, microporous ceramic filters, carbon block resin (CBR), microfiltration and ultrafiltration membranes. Some water filters use more than one filtration method. An example is a mult-barrier system. Jug filters can be used for small quantities of drinking water. Some kettles have built-in filters.

Standard Flowmatic cartridge style water filters are added to existing plumbing, the water filter cartridges are normally 10 inches long by 2.5 inches in diameter. They are made by multiple manufacturers and are available in 0.5-100 micron ratings as well as activated carbon.
While water filters help in removing many unwanted substances, it does not remove one hundred percent of it.

Types of Water Filters

There are many different types of water filters in the market. Each water filter system has its own strength, technology, functionality and relative costs. Some water filters are good for a specific type of contaminant but may be completely ineffective against others. However, all would have the same purpose, which is to make our drinking water cleaner, purer and even tastier

Five common types of water filters and purifiers for residential use

1. Water filter pitcher

Water filter pitcher is probably one of the most common types of water filters as it is portable, easy to use and low cost. The centre of the pitcher has a filter where water is poured in to be treated. The filtered water will flow out of the lower part of the container and the water is ready for drinking.

This is a convenient way to get clean water, especially when we are outdoors or on field trips. It has a confined and limited cleaning capacity, however do note that there may be a need to change the centre filter more often

2. Faucet Water Filter

Faucet water filter uses a small device, to be install on the faucet. It removes the contaminants in the water before it comes out. It is normally inexpensive, easy to install and to use.

It slows the water flow down and does not work with a low faucet. Much filtered water may end up “wasted” as the cleaned treated water is unnecessary used for the cleaning of the basin and utensils

3. Showerhead Water Filter

Showerhead water filter is similar to faucet water filter. It is a small device installed on the shower head to filter the water for showering. Sometimes, the water filter comes with a shower head itself.

Water filter for shower head is good for areas where the water contains a high amount of chlorine and fluoride, which are known to cause dryness and irritations to individuals with sensitive skin. Users feedbacked that they feel reduced hair loss and smoother skin after use.

It removes simple contaminants, is inexpensive and easy to install. However, there is a need to change the water filter regularly as it has limited capacity of usage.

4, Countertop Water Filter

Countertop water filters are generally better than the water filter pitcher, faucet water filter or showerhead water filter in removing of contaminants. They are small devices connected to the faucet or it comes with its own faucet. It is designed mostly to filter water for drinking. The price is mid-ranged, and it may need electricity to operate. However, it also takes up countertop space

5. Under Sink Water Filter

Under sink water filter is typically a water filtration system installed under the sink, usually in the kitchen. Amongst all the above four water filter systems, the under-sink water filter is generally the most effective in removing of contaminants and bacteria in water.

It is more expensive when compared to the above water filter systems. It can process large amount of treated water within a shorter time. Installation is done by a plumber or people trained in this field.

When to change Water Filters

Replacing your water filters depend on several factors. Water filters typically have an estimated life cycle that’s measured in gallons of water. However, this is only a guideline based on average water use. This isn’t always a good indicator since water use varies per household. There are several things that can affect the life of our water filters

  • How well the water was earlier treated or filtered.
  • Using more water than the average family household.
  • Hard water  (heavy with minerals), which causes the scale to build up and clog the filter.
  • The overall condition of our water in terms of contaminants and how much must be filtered.

Signs That Water Filters Need Replacement

If there is an odour in the water or it takes on an unpleasant taste or when an active carbon filter becomes clogged, it becomes ineffective and useless. There could also be a gradual decrease in water pressure, which signals the need for a new one.
Replacing the water filters promptly ensure that the water filtration system is working effectively to continue to remove contaminants.
Always check the manufacturer’s water usage guidelines to check on the water filters’ expiry date.
